How often to bathe a dog
Most dogs only need a bath every month or two, or when they've rolled in something. Bathing too often can dry out the skin and coat. Brushing between baths keeps the coat clean for longer.
Why dogs need their own shampoo
Dog skin has a different pH from human skin, so human shampoo can leave it dry. Use a shampoo made for dogs, and a puppy shampoo for puppies, checking the minimum age on the label.
If your dog's skin is red, flaky or itchy, see your vet rather than switching shampoos; a shampoo can't fix an underlying problem.
Bath time tips
Brush out tangles before the bath, use lukewarm water, and keep shampoo away from the eyes and ears. Rinse thoroughly, since leftover shampoo is a common cause of dry skin, then towel dry.
