Which brush for which coat
Short, smooth coats (Beagles, Boxers, Labs): a rubber brush or a bristle brush lifts loose hair and dirt. Double coats (Huskies, Shepherds, Samoyeds, Golden Retrievers): a slicker brush plus a deshedding tool or undercoat comb, especially when they shed. Long, silky coats (Shih Tzus, Yorkies): a pin brush and a comb to work through tangles. Curly coats (Poodles, Doodles): a slicker brush and a metal comb, brushing down to the skin.
How to brush without hurting
Brush in the direction the hair grows, in sections, holding the hair above the part you're brushing. Use light pressure: a slicker brush's pins are fine and can scratch skin if you press hard.
For mats, hold the hair at the base so you don't pull the skin, and work from the ends inward. Large or tight mats are best left to a groomer.
How often to brush
Short coats: about once a week. Double coats: a few times a week, and daily during shedding season. Long and curly coats: daily or every other day, to keep mats from forming.
Questions
- What brush is best for a dog that sheds a lot?
- For double-coated dogs, a slicker brush plus a deshedding tool or undercoat comb removes the most loose hair. Short-coated shedders do well with a rubber brush.
- What's a slicker brush for?
- A slicker has fine, bent wire pins that remove loose hair and small tangles. It suits medium, long, curly and double coats. Use light pressure.
- How often should I brush my dog?
- From once a week for short coats to daily for long and curly coats, and more often during shedding season.
