Types of natural cat litter
Corn, wheat, walnut-shell, grass-seed and tofu litters usually clump, so you scoop them like clay. Pine and wood pellets usually don't clump: they absorb liquid and break down into sawdust, and you sift or change them. Recycled paper litter is soft and low-dust, but doesn't clump.
Natural litter vs. clay litter
Clay litter is mined and heavy. Plant-based litters are usually lighter to carry and made from renewable or by-product materials. Some can be composted or flushed in small amounts; follow each maker's guidance, and check your local rules first.
How to switch your cat to a new litter
Cats can be picky about litter. Mix a little of the new litter into the old one and increase it gradually over about a week. Keep the box in the same place, and if your cat avoids it, go back a step.
