Why cats scratch
Scratching is normal cat behavior: it keeps claws in shape, stretches muscles and leaves a scent mark. The goal isn't to stop it, but to give your cat something better to scratch than your couch.
Vertical, flat or angled?
Some cats like to stretch up a tall post, others prefer to scratch a flat pad or an angled board. Watch where your cat scratches now: the back of the couch means a tall, sturdy post; the rug means a flat scratcher. Posts should be tall enough for a full stretch and heavy enough not to wobble.
Getting your cat to use it
Put the scratcher right next to the spot your cat already scratches, rub a little catnip or silvervine on it, and reward your cat when they use it. Couch protectors cover the favorite spot while the new habit forms.
