What matters in a small apartment
In a small space the litter box is never far from where you eat, sleep and have guests over, so four things matter more than usual: how well it controls odor, how much it tracks onto your floors, how dusty it is when you pour and scoop, and how heavy the bag is to carry up the stairs or home from the store.
Clumping litters are usually easiest to live with in an apartment, because you remove the waste every day instead of letting it sit. Lightweight plant-based litters weigh far less per bag than clay, which helps if you don't have a car or an elevator.
Where to put a litter box in a small apartment
Bathrooms, a corner of a closet or under a bathroom sink cabinet with the door removed all work, as long as your cat can always get to it and it's not right next to their food and water. Avoid putting it somewhere loud, like next to the washing machine.
A litter mat outside the box catches most of what gets tracked. Boxes with high sides or a top entry cut down on kicked-out litter too.
Keeping odor down
Scoop at least once a day, keep the litter at the depth the maker recommends, and replace it completely on the maker's schedule. Wash the box with mild, unscented soap when you change it: strong cleaners and scents can put cats off.
