Size up, and check the weight limit
Standard XL often isn't big enough for a Great Dane or a Mastiff. Look at each maker's weight limit and measurements rather than the size name, and choose gear made for large and giant dogs.
Beds that don't flatten
Big dogs sink through thin foam. A thick, supportive foam base keeps them off the floor, and a bed long enough for them to stretch out matters more than you'd think.
Strong walk gear
A wide, padded harness with a sturdy leash ring spreads the pull of a strong dog, and a grab handle helps with getting in and out of the car.
Questions
- What size bed does a giant dog need?
- Measure your dog stretched out and add 8 to 12 inches. Giant breeds often need beds made specifically for them.
- Do large-breed puppies need special food?
- Puppies that will be 70 lb or more as adults should eat a food for growth that includes large-size dogs. Ask your vet.
- What harness is best for a big, strong dog?
- A wide, padded harness with a reinforced leash ring and a grab handle, sized by chest measurement.
