What puppies need
Look for a food whose AAFCO statement says it's for growth or all life stages. If your puppy will be 70 lb or more as an adult, choose one that includes growth of large size dogs.
How much and how often
Most puppies eat three to four small meals a day at first, dropping to two by about six months. Follow the feeding guide on the bag and adjust to keep your puppy lean.
Switching foods
Change foods gradually over 7 to 10 days. Ask your breeder or shelter what your puppy has been eating.
Questions
- When should my puppy switch to adult food?
- Usually around 12 months, or 12 to 24 months for large and giant breeds. Ask your vet.
- Do large-breed puppies need special food?
- Puppies that will be 70 lb or more as adults should eat a food for growth of large size dogs.
- Can puppies eat wet food?
- Yes, wet puppy food is fine, alone or mixed with dry.
