How to stop your dog pulling on the leash

By the Toodle team · Updated · Prices checked daily

Pulling is one of the most common walking problems, and it can be trained with patience and treats. Here are the steps, followed by harnesses, leashes and training gear in stock at the shops we work with.

Loose-leash walking, step by step

  1. Start somewhere boring

Practice in your hallway or yard first, where there's less to pull toward.

  2. Reward the spot by your side

Each time your dog is next to you with a loose leash, mark it with a "yes" or a click and give a small treat right at your leg.

  3. Stop when the leash goes tight

If your dog pulls, stand still. When the leash loosens or they look back at you, praise them and walk on.

  4. Change direction

Turn and walk the other way when your dog surges ahead, and reward them for catching up beside you.

  5. Keep sessions short

A few minutes of practice at a time, a few times a day, works better than one long, frustrating walk.

  6. Make it harder slowly

Once they've got it at home, practice on quiet streets, then busier ones. Bring treats on every walk for a while.

Does a harness help?

A front-clip harness turns your dog toward you when they pull, which many owners find makes training easier. Head halters give more steering, but take some getting used to. Either way, they're a help while you train, not a replacement for it.

Why we left out retractable leashes

A retractable leash is always a little tight, so it rewards pulling. A standard 4 to 6 foot leash is best while you're teaching loose-leash walking.

Questions

What's the best harness for a dog that pulls?
Many trainers suggest a front-clip harness, which turns your dog back toward you when they pull. Fit matters more than brand.
How long does it take to stop leash pulling?
It depends on the dog and how often you practice. Short daily sessions usually show progress within a few weeks.
Should I use a retractable leash?
Not while training: the constant tension rewards pulling. Use a standard 4 to 6 foot leash.
