Air-dried, freeze-dried or dehydrated?
Air-dried food is dried slowly with gentle heat into chewy, jerky-like pieces you scoop straight into the bowl. Freeze-dried food is frozen and has its water removed in a vacuum; it's light and crumbly, and many are rehydrated with water before serving. Dehydrated food is usually a powder or flakes you mix with warm water.
All three are shelf-stable until opened, with no freezer needed.
As a full diet or a topper
Many of these foods are complete and balanced, but they cost more per day than kibble, so plenty of owners use them as a topper on dry food. The label says whether a food is complete or complementary.
Handling raw freeze-dried food
Many freeze-dried foods are raw. Wash your hands, your dog's bowl and any surfaces after serving, as you would with raw meat.

- Many are. Freeze-drying removes water without cooking. Each maker says on the label whether the food is raw or cooked.
- Do I need to add water?
- Air-dried food is served as is. Many freeze-dried and dehydrated foods are rehydrated with water first; follow the feeding guide on the bag.
- Can I mix it with kibble?
- Yes. Many owners use these foods as a topper. Reduce the kibble a little to keep daily calories about the same.
